Jesmond Dene is a wonderful, historic park in the heart of suburban Newcastle. The Dene is formed from the Ouseburn's steep-sided, wooded valley which is a peaceful haven for residents, visitors and wildlife alike. Located between Jesmond, Heaton and South Gosforth, the dene is easily accessible via all forms of transport. Jesmond Dene is an ancient woodland and of geological interest. The dominant tree species are English, with a mix of exotic species. Wildlife can be found in abundance - with otters, kingfishers and dippers known to have breeding sites on the river. The excellent network of paths, connecting the dene to neighbouring Ouseburn parks makes this In 1883 Lord Armstrong presented the main area of Jesmond Dene to the Corporation of Newcastle upon Tyne for the benefit of its citizens and in 1884, the park was formally opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales. To commemorate the occasion, the Princess planted a turkey Oak near the Banqueting Hall.
