Our History. Eighth and High Street location in Des Moines, Iowa. Central Presbyterian Church has been a prominent part of Des Moines' religious landscape for generations. Founded in 1848, we're two years older than the city itself. And our first pastor, Rev. Thompson Bird, was the first mayor of the city of Des Moines. The Des Moines Christian Church was planted by a group of 18 disciples from all over the Midwest. They had a dream of building a church of true disciples of Jesus from every age, race, and socio-economic background in Des Moines.
