Located at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue in Central Park, the Arsenal is home to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the Arsenal Gallery, the City Parks Foundation, the Historic House Trust, and the New York Wildlife Conservation Society. It was built between 1847 and 1851 by the State of New York as a storage repository for The Arsenal. This text is part of Parks' Historical Signs Project and can be found posted within the park. The historic Arsenal is one of two buildings within Central Park that predate the park itself. (The other building is the block house, which dates from the War of 1812).
