Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827), one of the most gifted of early American artists, was a man of many talents. He studied painting with Benjamin West in London for only two and one half years. Later he pursued a military career In his letter to TJ of 2 Mar. 1812, Peale enclosed his pamphlet, An Essay to promote Domestic Happiness (Philadelphia, 1812), which contained a darkly humorous poem about the marital trials faced by farmer jenkins and his wife (Peale, Papers description begins Lillian B.
