Pachacuti's given name was Cusi Yupanqui, and was the son of Inca Viracocha who had appointed his brother Urco as crown prince. He was born in Cusco, in the palace of Cusicancha, bordering the Coricancha temple. His tutor, Micuymana, taught him history, laws and language, as well as the handling of quipus. Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui (flourished 15th century) Inca emperor (1438-71), an empire builder who, because he initiated the swift, far-ranging expansion of the Inca state, has been likened to Philip II of Macedonia.
