Kokott studied law in Bonn and Geneva. Subsequent to her studies, she earned the academic title of Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the American University (AU) Washington, D.C., while being on a scholarship of the Fulbright Program. There she also worked as an Assistant to Thomas Buergenthal, Judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Juliane Kokott is only the third female advocate general in the 50-year-plus history of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), in a role providing the 27 judges of the member states with independent advice.
