James T Farrell was born in Chicago in 1904, the son and grandson of Irish Catholic working-class labourers. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, where most of his novels are set. He was educated at DePaul University in Chicago and the University of Chicago. In 1931 he married Dorothy Butler whom he divorced and later remarried (after B i o g r a p h y.
