At the end of the gonotrophic cycle only about 10% of the blood meal protein amino acid carbon ends up in the eggs, with about 4% present as proteins and approximately 6% present as lipids; whereas approximately 20% is retained in the female as proteins (~10%), lipids (~8%), and sugars (~2%). Interestingly, the majority of the carbon (~70%) is oxidized and excreted as waste [28] (Figure 12.2). The length of the gonotrophic cycle is often used to determine the rate of mosquito blood-feeding.
