HBsAg specific B cells from patients with chronic hepatitis B are atypical B cells, characterized by low expression of CD21 and CD27, but high expression of inhibitory markers such as PD-1 and T-bet. In addition, HBsAg specific B cells from patients with chronic hepatitis B are not able to mature into anti-HBs secreting cells in vitro. HBsAg is the surface antigen of hepatitis B virus.
