A large, highly variable species that can be short and stemless thru to a tall, robust, clustering palm. It has an open conical shaped crown with large, flat leaves, and closely spaced leaflets, with dark green uppers, and silvery undersides. The large fruits are edible, and the seed kernel is a significant source of edible oil in Brazil, where A new taxonomic classification based on characters of the fruit, flowers and vegetative parts of Astrocaryum is presented, including descriptions and illustrations as well as data on distribution, habit, ecology and common names for each species. The palm genus Astrocaryum with 40 species is common in tropical South America extending northwards reaching Central America and Trinidad.
