César Vallejo was a Peruvian poet who lived in Paris and Spain for much of his adult life. His body of work, which is deeply rooted in his European, Peruvian, and indigenous heritage, is increasingly recognized as a major contribution to global modernism. Sometimes called a surrealist poet, "Vallejo created a wrenching poetic language for Spanish that radically altered the shape of its archaic peninsular Spanish, Trilce is an autobiographical and linguistic tour de force. Trilce appears all the more shockingly post-modern as the date of its composition (1920-21) recedes in time.
