Established in 1899, the Vicksburg National Military Park protects 1,728 acres of battlefield land encompassing the Union and Confederate trenches surrounding the city and overlooking the Mississippi River. Sixteen miles of tour road provide visitors easy access to the Park's many sites and monuments. The Visitor Center and the USS Cairo museum The Geography and Map Division materials are based on Civil War Maps: An Annotated List of Maps and Atlases in the Library of Congress, compile by Richard W. Stephenson in 1989. This bibliography not only includes descriptions of printed, photoreproduced, annotated, and hand-drawn maps made between 1861 and 1865, but also maps made later to May 18 - July 4, 1863.
