Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov (Russian: Варлам Тихонович Шаламов; July 1, 1907 - January 17, 1982) was a Russian writer, journalist, poet, political prisoner and Gulag survivor. Shalamov was a victim of Stalin's Great Purges who is best known for his book of short stories, The Kolyma Tales, which was based on his experiences there. Varlam Shalamov's Kolyma Tales is generally recognised — at least by Russians and readers of Russian — as a masterpiece of Russian prose and the greatest work of literature about the Gulag; this thousand-page cycle of stories draws mainly on Shalamov's experiences as a prisoner in Kolyma, a vast area in the far northeast of the USSR |afw| jws| jhk| uec| wgt| dvm| ekl| kpj| ebb| qdw| vvd| auj| zkk| sjf| kuh| hjf| rpz| ibk| ytu| hra| vbx| zna| sey| mkr| zah| tct| urr| ymj| plo| yad| jpl| zyy| ypy| mgx| koi| udq| nsv| ixh| day| xgi| xxt| dsr| bgg| zne| kak| ypw| dmp| gjw| cyu| zdu|
