Marsalis's musical output is as compositionally attuned to disorder and chaos as the artist's two-dimensional work. For the Los Angeles native, the stage and the picture plane are interdependent, parallel Jasper Armstrong Marsalis released his third record under the name "Slauson Malone 1" on Oct. 6. Marsalis worked with producer Andrew Lappin and cellist Nicky Wetherell to create the album "EXCELSIOR," which is a dynamic and vigorous collection of 18 songs that preach ambivalence both sonically and lyrically. The most famous musician in contemporary jazz, Wynton Marsalis had a major impact almost from the start. In the early '80s, it was major news that a young and talented Black musician would choose to make a living playing acoustic jazz rather than fusion, funk, or R&B.
