Lake Le Homme Dieu. /  45.92861°N 95.34889°W  / 45.92861; -95.34889. Lake Le Homme Dieu is a lake in Douglas County, in the U.S. state of Minnesota. [1] Lake Le Homme Dieu was named for a friend of Gleny King, an early settler. [2] The name comes from french "L'homme de Dieu", meaning "The man of God". The story goes that the people of Alexandria had just built a Catholic Church and ran out of money before a bell could be purchased. Stephen Satterlee L' Hommedieu donated a bell, and the lake may have been named after him in gratitude. Since he lived from 1806 - 1875, that puts him in the time span in which the lakes were named. Which leads me, of course, to Theatre L'Homme Dieu. THLD is in its 57th year of existence, the longest running summer stock theater in Minnesota. While growing up in the Ozzie and Harriet-ness of Alexandria's Victoria Heights, I recall attending TLHD in the early 1960s.
