Nakum is situated in the northeastern part of the Department of Peten, Guatemala, 11 km north of Lake Yaxha and 25 km southeast of Tikal (Figure 1). The site is located on the banks of the Holmul River, at an elevation of approximately 200 m asl. The discovery of Nakum is attributed to the French count Maurice de Périgny in The Nakum site Nakum consists of two separate architectural sectors (northern and southern) located on two low natural hills in the close vicinity of the Holmul River. Both sectors are connected by an elevated causeway (the Périgny Causeway), which is approximately 250m long × 26m wide.
