Shivaji I (Shivaji Shahaji Bhonsale; Marathi pronunciation: [ʃiʋaːd͡ʒiˑ bʱoˑs(ə)leˑ]; c. 19 February 1630 - 3 April 1680) was an Indian ruler and a member of the Bhonsle Maratha clan. Shivaji carved out his own independent kingdom from the declining Adilshahi Sultanate of Bijapur that formed the genesis of the Maratha Empire.In 1674, he was formally crowned the Chhatrapati of his Sivaji and the Mughals: For the first time in 1656 during the reign of Shahjahan, Sivaji had attacked the Mughal territory. The period between 1657-1659, Shivaji had increased his power so much that Aurangzeb had sent his maternal uncle Shayasta Khan in 1660 against him.
