Curator's comments Text from William Fagg, 'The Tribal Image', BMP, 1977, no.39: This is the most famous of all Bakuba statues, being the representation of the king who is most celebrated in their traditions, Shamba Bolongongo, ninety-third king in the traditional list, who reigned early in the sixteenth century (and according to recent research may very well have come into the Bakuba Shamba Bolongongo African King of Peace (1600-1620) by Roy LaGrone. Hailed as one of the greatest monarchs of the Congo, King Shamba had no greater desire than to preserve peace.
