INS Viraat was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1987. Following its decommissioning, the Mumbai company had bid for one it successfully at Rs 38.54 crore. INS Viraat, the second Centaur-Class aircraft carrier in service which has spent 30 years in the Indian Navy and 27 years in the Royal Navy, was decommissioned on the day, in a solemn yet grand ceremony at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai. The decommissioning ceremony was attended by more than 1300 personnel who have served on board INS Viraat. Once the INS Viraat reached Alang, there was one final attempt made by little-known Envitech Marine Consultants Pvt Ltd. The company, however, could not enter into a deal with the Alang shipbreaker after Rs 100 crore was sought for the vessel along with a no-objection certificate from the Centre.
