Poggioreale. The new Poggioreale is displaced on overlapping bastions, each one in a ring around a circular square; the scenographic piazza Elimo was designed by the famous architect Paolo Portoghesi. However, the identity of Poggioreale is not to be found in its new inhabited centre, but in the striking ruins of the old "ghost town" which Poggio Reale. The garden and Villa of Poggio Reale was located in Poggioreale, then outside the walls of Naples. It was an important renaissance villa and garden. In 1487 the future King Alfonso II chose the site for a royal residence. In 1604 the viceroy Juan Alonso Pimentel de Herrer beautified the villa, with trees and fountains. Like a recent Pompeii, ancient Poggioreale is a theatre of ruins between drama and poetry, characterized by the suspension of time: a place of memory that tells the life of a community crystallized between the '50s and '60s along with its spaces and its architecture..
