Kiran Rao has been in the industry for decades, starting out as an assistant director, and one of her early projects was Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001), that starred, and was produced by Aamir Early life. Kiran Rao was born into a Telugu-Bengali family of J. C. Rao on 7 November 1973 in Hyderabad, and grew up in Kolkata. In 1992, her parents decided to leave Calcutta so she moved to Mumbai with Ajay Goyal. She graduated with a food sciences major from the Sophia College for Women in 1995.
