James, Etta. Etta James was born Jamesetta Hawkins in Los Angeles in 1938. James's mother was still a high school student when she was born, and she was largely raised by an aunt and then by a foster family. At five years old, she began singing at the St. Paul Baptist Church, famous for its Echoes of Eden gospel choir. Etta James songs quickly scored another R&B hit with "Good Rockin' Daddy," then had a bit of lull before signing with Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, where her skilled vocals easily transitioned Soul and blues singer Etta James, best known for the tracks At Last and for I'd Rather Go Blind, has died aged 73.
