Wonder at the enigmatic carvings on a 2m tall Pictish monolith, which once stood on a stone cairn. The Picardy Symbol Stone is unusual for two reasons: It's carved with the mysterious symbols typical of Pictish stones from this era, dating to about AD 600. From the stone's site we get a good view of the Dunnideer hill-fort, which may have 'Royal' Rhynie. In 2011 the Northern Picts project began work at Rhynie in Aberdeenshire. In the 1970s the iconic Rhynie man, a six-foot high Pictish stone carved with a distinctive figure carrying an axe, was uncovered by a farmer ploughing a field and a Pictish symbol stone known as the Craw stane still stands. The Picts. The people known to history as the Picts, dominated Scotland north of the Forth of Clyde from the fourth to the ninth centuries AD. They were combined in the mid-ninth century with the Scots-Irish of Dalriada (Argyll), under Kenneth McAlpine, to form the basis of Scotland as we know today.
