The M-68 is a late Cold War era towed howitzer of Israeli origin. It was the first indigenious towed howitzer produced in Israel. The M-68 may have been partially or fully designed by Tampella of Finland. The M-68 was developed into the M-71, which in turn forms the basis of the newer M845 and TIG towed howitzers developed in Israel. The M-68 As built, the M-68 featured many tried-and-true qualities seen in other 155mm systems of the period. A four-wheeled, heavy-duty "split-trail" carriage (making up the tow arms) was used for supporting and transporting the 20,900lb weapon whose barrel measured 16.8 feet in length. Projectiles were fed by way of a horizontal breech block. Soltam Systems developed its ATMOS 2000 wheeled Self-Propelled Artillery (SPA) at the turn of the century as a private venture primarily aimed at the export market.
