Considered to be one of the world's most beautiful (and arguably the most beautiful) tortoise species, the Radiated Tortoise (Astrochelys radiata) is an unmistakable icon in the chelonian world. This somewhat large tortoise (up to 16" and 35 lbs) stands tall on thick elephantine feet which carry its noticeably arched shell high off the ground. Distribution Astrochelys radiata is an endemic species and lives exclusively in the southwest of Madagascar. It is found in an area of about 21000 km2 between the rivers Onilahy and Mandrare. Today it still occurs naturally in a narrow belt of land extending from the coast to about 50 km inland.
